Cuckoo Ales
The term "cuckoo ale" comes from a custom among 19th century workmen, particularly in Shropshire. They'd stop work as soon as they heard the first cuckoo of the year, and take the day as a holiday. They'd then go off and drink ale outdoors to welcome the cuckoo - and that beer would be named the cuckoo ale.
